We are proud to be presenting our company in the upcoming HOME GARDEN & LIFESTYLE SHOW, sponsored by the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Ann Arbor. This will be held on Friday through Sunday, March 19 – 21, 2010, at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds.
Acheson Builders will be in the first building, in a booth on your right, soon after the entrance and ticket table. Stop by to see us!
There will also be lots of other vendors, including lots of landscape companies that always present really beautiful gardens and displays. It’s a fun way to get your spring gardening and home improvement ideas in gear!
I have one hundred free tickets to give away. They will be selling for $5.00 each at the door, butI’D LOVE TO GIVE YOU SOME FREE TICKETS! Just email me or call with your name and address, and we will mail these out to you.
We have been members of the Better Business Bureau for over 9 years, and we have an A+ RATING – which means you can TRUST US when it comes to your project!
This means we take care of our clients, and we strive to please you each and every day with our design creativity, our workmanship, our integrity and follow through, as well as our fastidious care for and protection of your property.
There is a job “Summary” page which will keep you updated on the running total for your project (with any authorized changes or upgrades/credits.) This page shows local weather, as well.
There is a section for “Documents” (such as proposal, specifications, and invoices) where we will upload all documents for your project as they are developed.
Through “Messages” we can send and receive email to each other, and have a record of correspondence regarding your project all in one place. Unless you find this unpleasant (please let us know if that is the case), we would like you to correspond with us through this program when sending email. (Phone calls are always fine, as well!) Besides keeping messages for your project all together, you will be able to see when your messages were received and read. (You will be notified through your regular email when a new message is available for you, and there will be a link to click on for you to easily reply through the program.)
“Photos” will include your before photos, and we may add some as the project goes along. You may feel free to upload your own “in process” or “after” photos in this section. It’s easy to share those photos with friends through the software, if you wish to.
In the section for “Changes” (if there should be any) we will upload a document describing the change and the cost or credit for the change, which you will then be able to authorize or reject. Once a change is authorized, the cost will automatically be added to (or subtracted from) your running total.
We use the section titled “Options” to confirm your selections for items that are not specified fully in the proposal and that still need to be selected, such as Allowance items. You will have to click on each room location to find the selection descriptions, and you can authorize them electronically.
There is a “Calendar” which will help keep you and our workers informed of dates when different stages of the job are expected to be done. One caveat: When we provide a schedule, as in this program, we want you to know that things can change rapidly and we cannot always follow the schedule precisely nor update it as often as we’d like. You can plan on us NOT following it in every detail, but generally getting to the same ending point at about the same time – barring additional work, weather, or other unforeseen glitches.
When you log out, you will be redirected to our website. Feel free to look around at new articles or information there (more posted regularly), or you can just close out of that.
We are happy to be able to serve you! We hope to exceed your expectations, and make the project happen as smoothly, efficiently, and beautifully as possible.
Please let us know how you like this program, or if you have any questions or concerns.
Here it is, a cool morning, and my husband and I start a beautiful day here in Michigan. We started our business, Acheson Builders, back in 1973, over 36 years ago! Our vision was to focus on our craftsmanship and attention to detail. After all, we are trusted with the pleasure of working on people’s homes – the place where our clients’ family lives and spends the majority of their time. Their peace and haven.
Acheson, over the years, has developed a reputation and a saying that we adopted from our clients and feel is very appropriate for how we go about our craft:
“An Artist’s Eye, A Craftsman’s Touch.”
What’s Important to YOU?
With our name on the business and right there for everyone in our community to see, our name is everything to us. This isn’t just a business, it is our life and passion. Our desire is your desire: to have an honest relationship, build with the true skill of a craftsman, assess your needs and deliver to your family what you deserve – An experience that will make you proud to be part of our family of clients.
Choosing what is right for your home
When we meet with a family that is interested in having their home enhanced, redesigned or wanting and needing remodeling, we realize that everything we mentioned above is important. Since 90% of our family of clients are referred to us or are previous clients calling us for more work, we focus all of our efforts on doing what is right, communicating effectively, working diligently and keep the true priorities in mind everyday:
Some time ago, as part of a remodeling project, we built these custom wood stairs (shown at left) to replace some outdated metal ones. The homeowners were so pleased with our craftsmanship that they hired us to do several projects for them at the same home, including a master bathroom remodel.
When, a number of years later, they decided that they wanted to build a new larger home, with a built in pool, on a beautiful tree’d lot near Plymouth Michigan, they knew who to call. They knew not only the skill and integrity of Jim Acheson when it came to detailed and complicated projects, but they also knew he had the experience and knowledge of sound building practices, and they had confidence that he and his company, Acheson Builders, could successfully run a large custom home project – about 7500 SF, along with accompanying swimming pool and pond, even though it was larger than many projects he had done up to that point. They were right! The home turned out magnificently, and has held up well to the test of time. That was some 18 years ago! No callbacks!
The new home was quite impressive, and took nearly a year to build, but it was worth the satisfaction of knowing that when you are faithful in handling smaller jobs, they will many times lead to greater things – even another set of curved stairs – this time a double set!

Acheson Builders is proudly a family owned, family run full-scale remodeling and building firm. We’ve been working together for more than 30 years, my husband Jim Acheson and I. One might think we’d get sick of each other, working together every day, and many evenings as well. But amazingly, we have neither grown tired of each other, nor lost the romance, but our relationship only seams to get stronger – we actually LIKE working together, and LIKE living life together. Aren’t we blessed!
Over the years, my role in the business has first waned and then increased, as our kids have been born and raised and then needed less and less of their mother’s attention. Now the kids have all moved on with their own endeavors. Jim and I continue to be very much involved in the daily events and schedule of running the business and caring for our lifeblood, our clients. Jim is still the main guy, who goes out to our clients’ homes, and helps guide them through the solutions to their needs and desires in making their house more like the home they wanted. With Jim’s many years of experience, and his ability to listen to our clients’ needs, he is widely known for his expertise in achieving the results our customers desire – and he enjoys building a relationship that goes beyond our clients’ expectations. We believe people want dedication, a clear concise process, to be treated fairly, and to feel like they are our top priority (which is so true)!
Each of our kids has contributed to the family business in many ways. Our daughter started working in the office at around age 8, just doing cleaning and small odd jobs. Later she spent some summers working as an administrative assistant, and moved into some leadership in the office management, at various stages of her life. Our sons served as carpenter’s apprentices at various times, and both also contributed greatly to our administrative responsibilities. One son especially has made significant differences in upgrading our computerized estimating process. These young adults have all chosen to move into other lines of work in their lives, but I am sure they have benefited from the experiences of working here, and seeing their family’s dedication, as Acheson Builders has benefited much from their contributions as well.
We would like to believe, as our clients do, that we are Michigan’s hidden gem and we are making great strides to grow in our community even through challenging times. We know that the only place success comes before hard work is in the dictionary. We enjoy working closely with clients to solve their needs and make their house a little more like home. Our greatest rewards are happy clients, and beautified homes!
Acheson Builders recently completed a major kitchen remodeling project for us. They work very hard to avoid surprises (some surprises are inevitable when remodeling an older house) and to stay within budget. The quality of the design and the work itself are exceptional. We are very pleased with the results.
Jim and Marilyn Acheson are great people to work with and the men who worked on our project, Kevin and Ben, are terrific people whom we would welcome into our house any time.
This most recent project is the third time (over a period of about thirty years in three different houses) that we have worked with Jim on a kitchen remodeling project. We have never been less than satisfied.
